Women’s Rowing Medals in Four Events at FIRA Championships

SARASOTA, Fla. – The women's rowing team brought home some hardware from Saturday's racing at the FIRA Championship Regatta at Nathan Benderson Park.

The Panthers competed in five events, medaling in four. Tech took first in the Varsity 4+ and Freshman/Novice 4+, second in the Varsity 8+ and Freshman/Novice 8+.  The Women's second Varsity 4+ placed fourth in their event.

The Varsity 8+ got the day started for Tech, competing in a field of eight crews. The Panthers could not keep pace with DII top seed Embry Riddle, but easily stayed ahead of DII programs Rollins College, Nova Southeastern and Barry.  The silver was an impressive finish for a boat with four freshman who had not rowed before arriving on Campus.

The experienced rowers from that Varsity eight, led by Junior Stroke Brynn Romberger, subsequently raced in the Varsity 4+ event, finishing ahead of second place Embry Riddle by 4 seconds, and the four freshmen from the Varsity 8+ raced in the Freshman/Novice 4+ easily defeating second-place Nova Southeastern by nine seconds.

With 10 of the 15 women's program being Freshmen, the lady panthers were able to field a Freshman/Novice 8+ that rowed extremely well together, defying their inexperience and finishing second behind Embry Riddle.

The Panthers also raced in the Varsity 4+ B event, where the five novice freshmen pushed hard down the course for fourth place.

The regatta results were a testament to their dedicated training and excellent coaching by club advisors Adam Thorstad and Catherine Davie.  It also provides great promise for the rebuilding of the women's rowing program.
