Women’s Rowing Medals in Three Events at FIRA Championships

SARASOTA, Fla. – The women's rowing team brought home some hardware from Saturday's racing at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association (FIRA) Championship Regatta at Nathan Benderson Park. The Lady Panthers raced in three events against Rollins, Barry, Nova Southeastern, Embry-Riddle, Florida, Central Florida, Florida State, and Tampa.
The Panthers medaled in all three events, taking first in the Varsity 4+, second in the Varsity 8+, and third in the 2nd Varsity 4+. The results were quite impressive for the 10 athletes competing, of which seven were freshmen and sophomores.
The Varsity 8+ got Tech's day started, competing against seven crews. The Panthers were unable to keep pace with DII top seed Embry-Riddle, but easily stayed ahead of DII programs Rollins College and Nova Southeastern.
The experienced rowers from that Varsity eight, led by Senior Stroke Brynn Romberger, subsequently raced in the Varsity 4+ event, finishing ahead of second-place Embry-Riddle by a commanding 14.9 seconds. The lesser experienced rowers, led by Freshman Stroke Eliana Wilson, raced in the 2nd Varsity Four, finishing third behind Rollins and Embry-Riddle.
The regatta results were a testament to the athletes' dedicated training and to the excellent coaching of Adam Thorstad and Catherine Davie. It also provides great promise for the rebuilding of the women's rowing program.
