Strong Pitching and Timely Hitting Leads Panthers Past Sharks

MELBOURNE, FLA. – The Panthers took the field this afternoon for the series finale against Nova Southeastern. After coming up short in Friday's doubleheader, Tech was looking to end the weekend on a high note.

SSC PLAY – SERIES FINALE
Final: Florida Tech Panthers 9, Nova Southeastern Sharks 1
Records: Florida Tech (13-10, 4-5 SSC) | Nova Southeastern (10-11, 3-6 SSC)
Location: Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field | Melbourne, Florida

GAME NOTES:
  • AJ Wydra took the ball for Tech in the final game of the series and was dominant in his outing. He began his day by not allowing a Shark base runner to reach third base through his first three innings of work.
  • Outside of a first-inning double from Gabe Roque, the Panther bats were quiet through the first two innings, but felt a big inning coming.
  • In the bottom of the third, Tech loaded the bases after a Dylan Fatovich double and back-to-back walks from Adrian Dominguez and Roque. After an error on a Marcello Cortale ground ball, the Panthers pushed across the game's first run, but the floodgates were about to open.
  • Brian Perez and Marshall Burke both singled with runners in scoring position to push across three more runs. A wild pitch from the Nova pitcher gave way to another tech run and the lead grew to 5-0.
  • The Sharks tried to respond, but with two runners on base, Wydra struck out two batters in a row to end the threat and keep NSU off the board.
  • Wydra finished his day after five shutout innings, notching six strikeouts and only giving up two hits.
  • In the top of the sixth, Reilly Kuhar entered the game in relief and despite giving up a run, worked through traffic to limit the damage and keep Tech out front.
  • The Panther bats exploded again in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs off three hits and two walks. Roque singled to lead off the inning and Cortale followed him with a single of his own. Both Panthers scored on a double from Anthony Fimiano, who scored later in the inning off a throwing error from the Sharks catcher. Brian Perez also scored in the inning after drawing a walk and the Panthers were in full control up 9-1.
  • Kuhar settled into his appearance, striking out three Sharks and holding them scoreless through the final three innings of the game to hold the eight-run lead and win the game.
FINAL: Florida Tech Panthers 9, Nova Southeastern 1
