Game Recap: Baseball |

Meadows, Burke Launch Homers, Panthers Fall to No. 2 Tampa

TAMPA, FLA. – Florida Tech baseball was back in action this afternoon for games two and three of their series against the reigning national champions, the University of Tampa.

SSC PLAY – DOUBLEHEADER GAME ONE
Final: Florida Tech Panthers 2, #2 Tampa Spartans 6
Records: Florida Tech (17-25, 8-18 SSC) | Tampa (35-7, 21-2 SSC)
Location: Tampa Baseball Field | Tampa, Florida

GAME NOTES:
  • After a scoreless first inning, the Panthers struck first in the top of the second. Marshall Burke hammered his third home run of the year to put Tech up 1-0.
  • However, the lead would not last long as the Spartans used a walk and two-out double to tie the game at one in the bottom half.
  • The Panthers threatened in the top of the third with a leadoff double from Justis Meadows, but Tech was unable to capitalize.
  • Unfortunately, Tampa would be able to capitalize on their chances with base runners in scoring position in the bottom of the third and fifth innings to take a 3-1 lead.
  • Despite the three runs, Freshman Jaxon Clampitt was a bright spot on the mound. He battled through multiple jams to keep the Panthers within striking distance.
  • Anthony Fimiano, Joseph Phan and Marshall Burke added more hits to the Tech stat line but none of them could come around to score.
  • Tampa tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third to push their advantage to 6-1.
  • Brady Guthrie entered the game on the mound for the Panthers and provided a much-needed spark. Guthrie escaped a jam in the bottom of the sixth and tossed back-to-back scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth, picking up three strikeouts in the process.
  • Tech showed fight in the bottom of the ninth with base hits from Marcello Cortale and Adrian Dominguez. While Cortale came around to score to cut the deficit to 6-2, Tampa held on to take the first game of the doubleheader.
FINAL: Florida Tech 2, #2 Tampa 6

SSC PLAY – DOUBLEHEADER GAME TWO
Final: Florida Tech Panthers 4, #2 Tampa Spartans 8
Records: Florida Tech (17-26, 8-19 SSC) | Tampa (36-7, 22-2 SSC)
Location: Tampa Baseball Field | Tampa, Florida

GAME NOTES:
  • To begin the final game of the series, Justis Meadows doubled to right field and Adrian Dominguez singled to left. Meadows made his way to third before scoring the game's first run off a Marcello Cortale sacrifice fly.
  • Much like the first game today, the Panther lead did not last long. Tampa responded right away and pushed two runs across in the bottom of the first for a 2-1 lead.
  • Battling through defensive mishaps, Blake Holshouser escaped the first inning jam and tossed a clean 1-2-3 bottom of the second to keep it a one-run game.
  • In the top of the third, Jaden Hill and Justis Meadows led off the inning with back-to-back singles. The next batter, Adrian Dominguez, smashed a double off the center field wall to score Hill from second and tie the game at 2-2. A hard-hit infield ground ball allowed Meadows to score and take back the lead.
  • Tampa again wasted no time responding, hitting a solo home run and a three-run home run to take control of the game.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the Spartans tacked on another run to take a 7-3 lead into the final five innings.
  • Not backing down, Justis Meadows launched a home run over the left center wall to get the Panthers back on the board in the top of the fifth.
  • Jake Hill entered the game in relief and produced two straight shutdown innings to keep the momentum in the Tech dugout.
  • Graham Garner earned his first college hit and threw out his first base runner trying to steal in the seventh inning. Despite the success of Garner and another high-level at-bat from Meadows, Tech still trailed by three.
  • After another shutout inning from Hill in the bottom of the seventh, BJ Graham singled to right field in an attempt to start a two-out rally. However, Graham was left stranded, and the Spartans took a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the eighth.
  • After ten straight outs of being held scoreless, Tampa used a leadoff triple and a base hit to grow their advantage to 8-4.
  • Joseph Phan led off the top of the ninth with a single up the middle, but that was all the Panthers could muster as the Spartans went on to win the game.
FINAL: Florida Tech Panthers 4, #2 Tampa 8
