Cortale, Roque Hit Homers in Doubleheader Loss to Tars

WINTER PARK, FLA. – Florida Tech baseball was back in action this afternoon to take on the Rollins College Tars in an SSC doubleheader.

SSC PLAY – DOUBLEHEADER GAME ONE
Final: Florida Tech Panthers 2, Rollins College Tars 4
Records: Florida Tech (15-18, 6-11 SSC) | Rollins College (22-9, 13-4 SSC)
Location: Alfond Stadium | Winter Park, Florida

GAME NOTES:
  • Conner Wiggins earned the game's first hit with a single down the left field line in the top of the first. Adrian Dominiguez followed Wiggins with a base hit of his own and the Panthers were threatening early.
  • Tech converted the threat with Wiggins crossing the plate on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead in the first frame.
  • Rollins got the run back in the bottom of the second, but Jaxon Clampitt did well to limit the damage.
  • Marshall Burke and Dylan Fatovich added to the Tech hit total in the next two innings but were left stranded, and the game remained tied at one.
  • The Panther defense continued to shine in the series, adding to their SSC lead in double plays and Anthony Fiminao caught another runner trying to steal a base.
  • In the top of the fourth, Marcello Cortale hit the third Tech home run of the weekend with a bomb over the right center wall, putting the Panthers back in front 2-1.
  • Clampitt continued to roll on the mound, tossing a shutdown inning in the fourth and his third 1-2-3 inning in the fifth to keep the Panthers out front.
  • The Panthers tried to extend the lead with hits from Anthony Fimiano, Marshall Burke and Zade Stark, but all were left stranded on the base paths.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, a two-out rally from the Tars not just tied the contest but helped them take a 3-2 lead into the final three innings of play.
  • Rollins looked to extend the lead in the bottom of the seventh with runners on the corners and one out. However, another fantastic play from the Panther infield cut the lead runner down trying to score on a double steal. Brady Guthrie, who entered in relief for Clampitt, then struck out the batter at the plate to hold the deficit at one.
  • Unfortunately for Tech, another two-out run from Rollins off back-to-back hits gave them a 4-2 lead as the game moved to the ninth inning.
  • Despite earning a lead off base runner in the top of the ninth, the Panthers hit into a double play before the Tars got the final out to end the game.

Location: Alfond Stadium | Winter Park, Florida

GAME NOTES:
  • After a scoreless first inning from both sides, the Panthers struck first in the top of the second. Gabe Roque sent the first pitch of the inning deep over the right-center wall for his seventh home run of the year and a 1-0 lead.
  • Marshall Burke tried to extend the lead by hitting a double and being moved to third, but he was left stranded.
  • Blake Holshouser was dominant in his first start of the year, tossing five straight scoreless innings and striking out four Tars while only allowing two hits.
  • In the top of the fifth, Cole Patrick and Dylan Fatovich both earned walks to bring up Conner Wiggins with two outs. Wiggins smoked a ball through the 5-6 hole to score Patrick from second base and extend the lead to 2-0.
  • Holshouser went back out for the bottom of the sixth and produced another 1-2-3 shutdown inning, adding another strikeout to his incredible outing. Holshouser finished his day going six shutout innings with five strikeouts and only allowed three hits.
  • While Holshouser kept the Tars off the board through six innings, the Panthers were unable to add insurance runs, and the scoreline remained 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh.
  • The Tar offense came alive in the seventh, plating a pair of runs off three hits to tie the game at 2-2.
  • After the Panthers were unable to push across a run in the eighth, the Tars hit a two-run home run in the bottom half to take the lead. Rollins then added another run a few batters later on a sacrifice fly to go up 5-2 entering the ninth inning.
  • Tech was held hitless in the final frame as the Tars took the final game of the series.
