Florida Tech Concludes Panther Invitational

Women finish sixth, men win team championship on final day of 3rd Annual Panther Invitational




MELBOURNE, Fla. – Florida Tech concluded the 3rd Annual Panther Invitational with more impressive results on Sunday at the Panther Aquatic Center.

The Florida Tech women finished sixth in the standings with 374.5 points. Georgia Southern won the team championship with 858 points, followed by West Florida in second with 836.5 points. North Florida (573), Tampa (569) and Saint Leo (482) rounded out the top five in the women's standings.

The Panthers won the team title on the men's side with 423 points. Saint Leo took second with 357 points and Tampa finished third with 175 points.

In the men's 1,650 freestyle, the Panther duo of Samuel Hartle (16:22.54) and Ethan Kennedy (16.40.81) finished third and fourth, respectively.

Paulina Bjorkbacka took fourth in the women's 200 backstroke in a time of 2:07.60, almost two full seconds faster than her time in the prelims (2:09.50).

Emanuele Rossi finished second in the men's 200 backstroke in a time of 1:50.89, just behind the top finisher Clayton Howerton (1:49.98) of Saint Leo. Carlos Obregon took fourth in the race at 1:52.30, while Ferron Van Ritter (1:57.09) and Lukas Burchianti (1:59.68) ended in sixth and seventh, respectively.

Valentina Carvajal placed fifth in the women's 100 freestyle at 51.84, just short of her own school record in the event of 51.69.

The FIT men dominated the 100 freestyle final, garnering the top four spots in the race. Victor Rocha Furtado won the heat, and set a new school record, with his B-standard time of 43.49. Rocha Furtado just missed the A-standard time by .07 seconds. Filip Dujmic took second at a B-standard time of 45.12, followed by Thomas Steenberg in third at a B-standard time of 45.25. Harry Sale finished fourth overall in 46.14, just off the B-standard (45.59).

Savannah Brennan set another school record in the women's 200 breaststroke final, six total for the weekend, and finished fourth in the race at 2:20.87. She missed the B-standard time by just .43 seconds.

The Panthers took three of the top four spots in the men's 200 breaststroke final. Jose Coiman-Acosta ended in second at 2:05.25, followed by Corey Ollivierre (2:07.74) and Elias Econopouly (2:10.04) in third and fourth place, respectively.

Jill Collins took third in the women's 200 butterfly consolation final in a time of 2:13.71, almost five seconds faster than her prelim time (2:18.10).

Adi Davidov and Yagoh Kubagawa grabbed the top two positions in the men's 200 butterfly final. Both Panthers set B-standard times in the race, Davidov at 1:49.36 and Kubagawa at 1:50.19.

The women's 400 freestyle relay of Brennan, Mary Ida Spradlin, Neta Saar and Carvajal finished fifth in the final and set a new school record in the process with a time of 3:30.96.

In the final race of the weekend, the team of Rossi, Dujmic, Steenberg and Rocha Furtado won the men's 400 freestyle relay and set a NCAA provisional standard time of 2:58.15.

This concludes the fall season for the Florida Tech swim teams. The Panther men and women return to action on Saturday, Jan. 6, hosting Oklahoma Baptist at the Panther Aquatic Center at 11 a.m.
