GREENSBORO, N.C. – Continuing his impressive 2017-18 season,
Victor Rocha Furtado's performance in the 50 yard freestyle finals highlighted Wednesday's action for Florida Tech during day one of the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships at Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Competing in his best event, Rocha Furtado started the day by posting a time of 19.84 in the preliminary heats of the 50 freestyle to earn the second overall seed in the evening's final.
Then in the final, the Sao Paolo, Brazil native darted through the pool and touched the wall in a new school record time of 19.66 to finish as the national runner-up and a first team All-American. The national champion, David Lambert of Oklahoma Baptist, won the crown in a time of 19.29.
Rocha Furtado's second place result is the highest by any Panther in a solo event at the NCAA Championships in program history.
Continuing the day for FIT, the 200 medley relay of
Filip Dujmic,
Dain Rust, Rocha Furtado and
Emanuele Rossi garnered the 13th overall seed in the NCAA B-Final after ending with a time of 1:29.12 in the prelims.
In the B-Final, the Panthers' relay took 11th overall and set a new school record in the process with a time of 1:28.42 to earn honorable mention All-America honors.
The NCAA Championships continue on Thursday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center with the prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and the finals occurring at 6 p.m. Fans can access links to live results and video coverage on FloridaTechSports.com.
