STATESBORO, Ga. – Former Florida Tech men's soccer player
Craig McCall has inked his first professional contract with the South Georgia Tormenta FC.
Tormenta FC, which is based in Statesboro, Georgia, competes in the top division of the United Soccer League (USL). McCall joined the organization and played for Tormenta FC 2 in 2019, helping the team win the USL League Two's Southern Conference Championship and top the Deep South Division for the second year in a row.
In 14 matches and 871 minutes with Tormenta, the midfielder recorded one assist and two goals. McCall was then called up to train with the first team following the cancellation of the 2020 USL League Two season and has now signed with the team on a one-year deal with a club option for the upcoming 2021 USL League One season.
"I'm very delighted that I have been able to sign a pro contract at Tormenta FC and have a lot of excitement for what the future holds," said McCall. "It's a great place in which I can start my pro career and hopefully grow from there.
"I'm grateful for Florida Tech and more so Coach
Robin Chan and Coach
Ryan Moon, who gave me a second chance to play in the United States. They believed in me all the way; I wouldn't be in this position if it wasn't for them. I'm thankful for everyone who has helped me on this journey and hopefully this is just the start."
McCall, a native of Glasgow, Scotland, was a two-year member of the Florida Tech men's soccer team, playing during the 2018 and 2019 seasons after transferring from Eastern Florida State College.
McCall, who served as captain for the Panthers during the 2019-20 campaign, was one of the vocal leaders on the team over his career, while starting 30 of 31 games for a total of 1,415 minutes and amassing 10 assists and one goal.
"We're all very happy to see Craig progress into the professional game," exclaimed Florida Tech head coach
Robin Chan. "He had a professional mentality to his preparation and training habits from day one, and his passion for the game is clear for all to see. He gave everything for the team and left his jersey here in a better place. We are looking forward to seeing his career continue to grow with Tormenta FC."
In 2019, McCall was named to the All-SSC Second Team and the United Soccer Coaches All-South Region First Team after recording a career-high six assists and leading the Panthers to a 12-2-1 record season record. Tech made it to the Sunshine State Conference Tournament Semifinals that season and registered their first NCAA Division II Tournament bid since 2016.
Florida Tech defeated West Florida 2-1 in its first game of the 2019 NCAA Tourney, the program's first victory in the tournament since 1993. The Panthers eventually lost in the next round to Lynn 2-1 with McCall providing an assist on his team's lone goal in the game.
During his two seasons at Florida Tech, McCall helped lead the Panthers to a 22-8-2 overall record, including a 13-3-1 home record at Rick Stottler Field and a 13-5-1 mark in SSC play.
