Hajagos Finishes Runner-Up in 200 Fly at NCAA Championships

GENEVA, Ohio – Freshman Akos Hajagos's record-breaking week continued Friday Night when he finished second In the Men's 200 Fly A Final with a time of 1:44.57 to be named a 2024 NCAA 200 Fly Runner-Up. Along with Hajagos, Katherine Helminiak represented the Florida Tech women's swimming program on Friday, March 15th at Day Four of the 2024 NCAA Division II National Championships.

Before Friday night's A Finals, Hajagos began his morning swimming in the prelim qualifiers for the 200 Fly in which he broke the then-program record of 1:48.68 swimming a time of 1:45.19, which he would later break in the finals. His time of 1:45.19 was fast enough to earn him the number three seed heading into Friday Night A Finals.

Following his Second Place finish at the NCAA Championships, Akos Hajagos becomes Florida Tech's highest-finishing individual swimmer in the 200 Fly at an NCAA Championship on either the men's or women's programs. He is the second individual for Florida Tech to place runner-up at Nationals following Victor Rocha Furtado who in 2018 and 2019 placed second at the final meet of the season in the 50-yard and 100-yard Freestyles.

Hajagos now holds the honor of being named All-American in the 200 Fly and 400 IM.

Junior Helminiak also continued her journey at the NCAA Championships as she competed in the women's 500 Free prelims. With a time of 5:02.05, Helminiak finished 38th out of 49 total competitors in the event.

Up Next: Day four of the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships will begin at 10:00 AM. As Hagos's journey concluded on Friday night, Helminiak will have another shot at earning a National Championship, this time in the 1650 Free.
