MELBOURNE, Fla. – Two individuals and a relay squad of the Florida Tech Men's Track team earned All-Sunshine State Conference (SSC) honors following standout performances at the inaugural SSC Outdoor Track Championships, held on April 17 in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Filippo Bessi's incredible first season made him a lock for SSC Freshman of the Year.
Bessi, from Merone Lombardia, Italy, captured All-SSC First Team honors with his victory in the 400-meter hurdles, cruising to a school record 54.31. The win made Bessi the first SSC Champion in Panther Men's Track history. The freshman also scored points in the 400-meter dash, including a personal best 48.99 time, and as part of the 4x100-meter relay team for a total of 20 points, which was enough to be named the top freshman sprinter of the championship meet.
Bessi's impressive performance, along with his stellar overall season, earned him the title of SSC Freshman of the Year.
Sophomore
Anthony Akpan, a native of Nigeria, was named to the All-SSC Second Team after strong finishes in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and as a member of the 4x100-meter relay.
Bessi and Akpan were key contributors to Florida Tech's 4x100-meter relay team, which also secured All-SSC Second Team recognition with a second-place finish. They were joined by sophomore
Bradley Erskine Jr. and junior
Ese Oguma in the relay effort.
