MELBOURNE, Fla. (Swimming) – The Florida Tech men's and women's swimming teams recorded impressive performances on day one of the 2017 Division II Fall Showcase at Panther Aquatic Center.
The showcase is jam-packed with talent this year. On the women's side, Florida Tech is facing off with three teams ranked in the preseason TYR/CSCAA DII Poll – No. 1 Drury, No. 3 Nova Southeastern and No. 22 Florida Southern.
The Panther men, ranked No. 16 in the preseason, are squaring off with three top 10 teams – No. 2 Drury, No. 3 Nova Southeastern and No. 9 Florida Southern.
After the first day's action, Florida Tech is fourth in the women's standings with 251 points. NSU leads the way with 519 points, while Drury (442) and Florida Southern (287) are second and third, respectively.
On the men's side, FIT is third with 329.50 points. Drury is first with 456 points and Nova Southeastern (407.50) and Florida Southern (305) are second and fourth, respectively.
The Panthers got off to a strong start Friday when the team of
Adi Davidov,
Corey Ollivierre,
Victor Rocha Furtado and
Filip Dujmic finished second in the men's 200-medley relay with a time of 1:32.55. Drury took gold in that event at 1:30.63.
Freshman
Savannah Brennan took second place and set a new school record in the women's 400 IM with a time of 4:37.07. NSU's Courtney DeVeny won the race at 4:29.03.
Valentina Carvajal won the women's 200-freestyle with a time of 1:51.79, almost two seconds faster than second place Erica Dahlgren (1:53.62) from Drury.
FIT occupied three of the top six spots in the men's 50-freestyle. Rocha Furtado won the race in 20.45, followed
Edward Ilako (21.19) in fourth and
Filip Dujmic (21.58) in a tie for sixth.
Yagoh Kubagawa (1:51.22) and Davidov (1:52.39) were impressive in the men's 200-butterfly, finishing second and fourth, respectively.
In the women's 200-backstroke,
Paulina Bjorkbacka took fifth place overall with a time of 2:12.05, just .38 seconds quicker than sixth place Madison Allen of NSU.
Brennan followed up her strong performance in the 400 IM with a third place result in the 200-breaststroke, touching the wall at 2:25.05.
Jose Coiman-Acosta earned fifth place in the men's 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:09.14.
The foursome of Carvajal, Brennan,
Mikaela Barger and Brianna Forte grabbed fourth place in the women's 400-freestyle relay at 3:34.79, just .03 seconds faster than Florida Southern's A-squad.
Closing out the first day on a high note, the unit of Dujmic,
Thomas Steenberg,
Harry Sale and Rocha Furtado posted a win in the men's 400-freestyle relay, finishing with a time of 3:03.10. FIT's B-relay of
Emanuele Rossi, Ollivierre, Davidov and Ilako took fifth place in the race at 3:11.47.
