CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Florida Tech men's and women's swimming teams competed in day one of the 2018 Sunshine State Conference Championships on Thursday at the Long Center Sports Complex.

After the first day of the championships, the Panther women are tied for sixth with 42 points, while the men are in third place with 123 points.
Emanuele Rossi posted a NCAA B-cut time in the men's 1,000 yard freestyle, ending with a time of 9:30.80 to take 10th overall in the event.

In the women's 200 yard IM,
Savannah Brennan finished 11th overall and third in the B-Final at a time of 2:06.91.

Yagoh Kubagawa was impressive in the men's 200 yard IM competition, grabbing fifth in the A-Final in a new school record and B-cut time of 1:49.84.
Jose Coiman-Acosta took sixth in the 200 IM B-Final and 14th overall at a time of 1:53.72.

Competing in the women's 50 yard freestyle,
Valentina Carvajal finished 15th overall and seventh in the B-Final with a new school record time of 24.18.

FIT's performance in the men's 50 yard freestyle highlighted the first day of competition for the Panthers.
Victor Rocha Furtado won the event final and, in doing so, set a new school and conference meet record with an A-cut time of 19.72.
Filip Dujmic just behind Furtado in second place with a B-cut time of 20.01.

It's the second year in a row that the Crimson and Gray took the top two spots in the 50 freestyle final and the third year in a row that a Panther has won the event.

Continuing FIT's strong day in the 50 free,
Edward Ilako finished eighth overall in the A-Final with a B-cut time of 20.79, while
Adi Davidov ended 16th and eighth in the B-Final at 20.91.

Florida Tech's A-relay of
Paulina Bjorkbacka,
Carter Juskevich,
Mikaela Barger and
Neta Saar placed fifth in the women's 200 yard medley relay with a school record time of 1:45.53.

The women's B-relay, which included
Trista Phelps,
Samantha Conger,
Briana Forte and
Mary Ida Spradlin took 14th overall at 1:52.62.

In the men's 200 medley A-Final, FIT's A-relay of Dujmic,
Corey Ollivierre, Rocha Furtado and Ilako finished third overall with a school record and NCAA provisional time of 1:28.57.

The men's B-relay, Davidov,
Dain Rust,
Harry Sale and
Thomas Steenberg, grabbed 10th overall and second in the B-Final at 1:32.09.

The swim teams return to the pool on Friday as the SSC Championships resume with the prelims beginning at 10 a.m.
