OCALA, Fla. – The Florida Tech swimming programs continued competition in the 2025 Sunshine State Championships on Saturday at the Florida Aquatics Swimming and Training (FAST).
Day four saw the program secure another two spots for next month's national championships in Indianapolis and another school record time set.
Heading into the final day of competition, the Tech women remain in fifth place with 209 points, while the Panther men have moved up to sixth place with 236 points.
WOMEN'S STANDOUTS
- Freshman Abby Briggs earned her first trip to the national championships with her time of 5:02.48 in the 500 Free, beating the qualifying time by two seconds.
- Rae Ann Dressel broke the school record in the 100 Breast with her time of 1:02.92, good for a Top-10 finish. Dressel broke the school record of 1:02.98 she set herself back in November.
- Kate Helminiak lowered her b-cut time in the 500 Free to 5:00.74, winning the B Final in the process.
- Melissa Zucco's time of 57.16 was good for a Top-15 finish in the 100 Back, as were Christina Ramirez (57.52) and Sonia Peters (57.85).
- Sophia Sichtnik earned a Top-15 finish in the 100 Breast thanks to her time of 1:05.77.
- In the 200 Free Relay A Final, the group of Ramirez, Peters, Dressel, and Debora Xavier finished fifth with a time of 1:36.07. The B Final saw the team of Miranda Olhasso, Torie Whitbeck, Brieleigh Wescott, and Helminiak post a time of 1:37.05 to finish fourth.
MEN'S STANDOUTS
- The 200 Fly prelims saw Dan Kunin guarantee himself a third event at the national championships with his time of 1:49.17, besting the qualifying line by .72s. Kunin then improved on that time in the A Final, as his finish of 1:47.78 was good for fifth place.
- The 500 Free A Final saw Efe Ongoren (4:26.51) place fourth and Adam Szczerba (4:36.02) take eighth.
- Zachary Reese (49.49) and Dylan Ostolaza (50.15) each earned Top-15 finishes in the 100 Back.
- Matthew Heaphy's time of 56.59 earned him a Top-15 finish in the 100 Breast.
- Jay Jay Fonnotto won the 200 Fly B Final as his time of 1:49.90 was just .01s shy of the B-Cut time for the event.
- Nathan Scott earned a Top-15 finish in the 200 Fly thanks to his time of 1:51.95.
- In the 200 Free Relay A Final, the quartet of Szczerba, Scott, Josh McLean, and Ostolaza placed sixth thanks to a 1:22.58 finish. The B Final saw the squad of Reese, Jacob Sykora, David Armstrong, and Fonnotto take third with a time of 1:24.31.
UP NEXT: The SSC Championships conclude on Sunday, starting at 10 A.M. with the prelims, followed by the start of the finals at 5 P.M. Among the events scheduled on Day Five are the 100 Free, 200 Back, 200 Breast, 1650 Free, and 400 Free Relay.
