DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Panthers' track sprinters both broke career bests but also placed high in multiple events. Two Tech sprinters finished in second place and four more placed top-20. The distance runners also saw improved times in the 1500-meter and 5000-meter runs.
The Panthers began the day with three runners making the top-20 and two in the top-15 in the 1500-meter run.
Lachlan McCure led the way, winning his heat and taking 12
th overall, clocking in at 4:00.81.
Thomas Carpenter and
Tyler Herrera followed closely beyond, running 4:04.81 and 4:05.06, respectively, for 15
th and 16
th place.
Another top-20 finish came two events later when
Ese Oguma sped to a 51.62 400-meter time for 16
th place.
One of the Panthers' many highlights was
Anthony Akpan in the 100-meter dash. Akpan sprinted to a 10.64 and took second place.
Loleyi Oluwatomisin competed in his first race of the season and made a time of 11.90.
The 800-meter dash saw five Panthers compete, and all made the top 30, including two in the top 10. Leading the pack,
Jason Hargesheimer finished in second place on a 1:54.87 mark.
Filippo Bessi scored 1:55.17 for sixth, and Dominic Longonbardi scored 1:57.03 for 11
th. Those three and
Ben Peck had personal-best times in the event.
Coming off his best time in Tampa,
Niels Buitenhuis showed out again in the 5000-meter, crossing with a 15:16.71 and in fourth place.
Joshua Fernandez-Alvarado shaved a minute and a half of his personal record 5000-meter time, finishing at 17:12.08.
Throwing the javelin for the first time,
Nathan Davis launched it 51.78 meters, securing a spot in the finals and ultimately taking eighth place.
