MELBOURNE, Fla.
(Men's & Women's Swimming) – Racing in the first conventional meet of 2017, Florida Tech performed well Friday afternoon at the Panther Aquatic Center, retuning in preparation for February's Sunshine State Conference Championships.
The Panther men completed the season-sweep of Saint Leo, toppling the Lions 143-118. SLU got the better of the FIT women's team, 145-117, but the Panthers were able to earn a 140-121 victory over Lynn.
In total the FIT women broke four school records on the day, setting new fastest times in the 200 medley relay, 100 breast, 200 free and 500 free.
Things started off on a positive note for FIT, with the 200 medley relay team of
Dar Raz,
Carter Juskevich,
Laura Carvajal and
Lauren Suarez earning a win in 1:46.40, an FIT record. Their male counterparts,
Nir Barnea,
Nathan Hufnagel,
Filip Dujmic and Matt Gallene grabbed second with a 1:35.78.
In the 1,000 free,
Ferruccio Rossi finished runner up with a time of 9:56.01, while Carvajal snagged a victory in the 200 free with a B cut time of 1:51.72, shattering the school record by nearly two full seconds.
Victor Furtado also won the 200 free in B cut fashion, timing in at 1:39.48. In the 100 back, Raz claimed second after touching in 59.54, while Emauele Rossi also placed second with a 54.34.
Juskevich got in on the fun in the 100 breast, narrowly besting SLU's Nicole Weber for first with a record time of 1:05.01. Hufnagel was runner up in the men's side, completing the circuit in 59.15.
Yagoh Kubagawa was the victor in the 200 fly, just outpacing teammate
Adi Davidov (1:52.28) with a 1:52.09. Suarez earned a second-place showing in the 50 free with a time of 24.63, while
Nir Barnea (21.02) was clipped by Matt Gallene (20.99).
Neta Saar grabbed second in the 100 free with a time of 54.02, while Furtado earned his second B cut of the meet with a 45.52 for first. In the 200 back, Raz garnered second in 2:11.38, while Kubagawa touched first in 1:57.57.
Hufnagel again finished second in the 200 breast, timing in at 2:12.93. Carvajal took her second win in the 500 free, setting a B cut with a time of 5:04.09, again smashing the school record.
Emanuele Rossi took second in the men's race, registering a 4:47.17.
In the 100 fly, Barnea just beat out the Lions' Milosz Mikicin, winning the race with a time of 50.09. Hufnagel garnered second place in the 200 IM, setting a time of 1:59.99.
The meet wrapped up with the 400 free relay. Suarez, Murphy, Saar and Carvajal teamed up to take second after making the final touch in 3:36.93. On the men's side, Barnea, Furtado, Gallene and Steenberg joined forces for the win with a time of 3:03.02, another B cut.
The Panthers head right back to the Panther Aquatic Center on Saturday, hosting Tampa at 11 a.m. ET. The meet is the final home contest of the season and thus is FIT's Senior Day.
