Bill Potter, a distinguished figure in the Florida Tech community, was honored with an induction into the Florida Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. His four decades of unwavering service and support to Florida Tech Athletics, the university, and Brevard County have left an indelible mark. Potter's multifaceted roles in various organizations, communities, and businesses have been instrumental in shaping the landscape of Florida Tech. In recognition of his exceptional contributions, Florida Tech bestowed upon him the prestigious President's Medal.

In 2017, the United Way of Brevard County recognized him with the Bridge Builder Award for his many years as a member of the board of directors and on his general council, where he worked in a pro bono status for more than 20 years.

He served as chairman of the Florida Tech Athletics Committee of the Board of Trustees. Over the years, Potter has received numerous awards for his volunteer work in Brevard County and Florida. He was a Greater Melbourne Chamber of Commerce member for over 30 years. In 2005, the Chamber of Commerce gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award. Space Coast Daily awarded him its Lifetime Achievement award for public service in 2013

Potter's commitment to peace extended far beyond the borders of Brevard County. As a Melbourne attorney, he undertook a significant mission from the United Nations to the war-torn cities of Bosnia and Herzegovina. His role as an international election official and his efforts to establish a new justice system were pivotal in the region's recovery. Potter's dedication to this cause continued as he served as the head of the Rule of Law department in the office of the high representative from 2002 to 2005, leaving a lasting legacy in the pursuit of global peace.

Potter served as a member of the university's Board of Trustees since 1981 and was chairman from 1990 to 1997. He was a School of Business Board of Overseers member and chairman of the Athletic Advisory Council in the 1990s. He founded the Florida Tech Sporting Affair, which raised funds for athletic scholarships in 1992. In 1989, he drafted the bylaws and articles of incorporation for the Sunshine State Conference. In 1987, Potter headed the search committee that hired Florida Tech's third president. He also received the 1992 Champion of Higher Independent Education in Florida.

Following college, Potter enlisted in the Florida Air National Guard in January 1967 and retired from the military in October 2000.
