In 1990, MacFarland was the stroke oar for the Panthers Men's Heavyweight Varsity Eight when they won the state championship and Southeast Collegiate Championships. The year before, he was the stroke oar for the silver medalist men's heavyweight varsity eight at Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia. This came a season after winning the men's heavyweight varsity eight gold medal at the Dad Vail Regatta. During his first year, McFarland started as the stroke oar and helped the Florida Tech Silver Medalist Men's Heavyweight Varsity Eight at Dad Vail Regatta in 1987.

Before coming to Florida Tech, MacFarland won a bronze and silver medal at the Pan American Games in 1987. He also went undefeated in varsity men's eight oared shell during the regular season as a stroke or for Ridley College in Canada during the 1986 season. MacFarland won the Stotesbury Cup in Philadelphia and the Thames Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta in England with Ridley.
