Tim Wakefield, a member of the baseball team from 1986-88, was bestowed with the prestigious honor of being inducted into the Florida Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. Wakefield was drafted in the eighth round by the Pittsburgh Pirates and had a long stellar career with the Pirates and Red Sox from 1988-2011. He went 8-1 with a 2.15 ERA in his first season in the majors with the Pirates in 1992. Wakefield won Sporting News Major League Rookie Pitcher of the Year. 

Wakefield holds career program records in home runs (40) and slugging percentage (.646). He is also eighth in program history in career RBI with 140 in his three seasons.

In his final season with Florida Tech, Wakefield earned All-SSC Second Team honors in 1988. However, his greatest season and team success were in 1987. Wakefield recorded a .344 batting average, 52 runs, 12 doubles, four triples, 22 home runs, 71 RBI and 24 walks. The 22 home runs, 71 RBI, and .798 slugging percentage are all program records for a single season.
